The NIS Directive is an EU initiative addressing network and information security across the Union. NIS2 expands its scope, introducing stricter requirements, heightened accountability, increased sanctions, and enhanced protection of consumer data. Similarly, the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) has significant implications for IT security within Swedish enterprises. In this white paper, we outline how Hypergene supports our customers in adopting and maintaining compliance with these regulations.

NIS stands for Network and Information Systems. Introduced in 2018, the directive aimed to improve the functioning of the EU’s internal market by establishing a higher, common level of security for networks and information systems across the Union.

NIS2 builds on the original directive by broadening its scope, imposing more stringent obligations, increasing accountability and penalties for non-compliance, improving cross-border coordination among EU Member States, reinforcing personal data protection, and allowing greater flexibility in national implementation.

It also establishes minimum cybersecurity measures and more precise incident reporting requirements. Non-compliance or failure to report an incident in due time can result in fines of up to €10 million or 2% of global annual turnover.

The Swedish implementation of NIS2 is currently in development, with completion expected by summer 2025.

Another key piece of EU cybersecurity legislation is the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), specifically targeting IT security within the financial sector. DORA will be enforceable from January 2025.
